What is the AWSBC?
AWSBC is a paper Centre designed primarily as a means of profiling animal welfare science and bioethical activities at Massey University.
The Centre brings together individuals from across the University, and outside, to work in multidisciplinary teams on particular welfare-related projects. It enables flexibility in team membership to meet the specific needs of each project.
Affiliated members of the Centre include the Co-Directors, Massey Associates who are academic and technical staff from within the University, and External Associates located in New Zealand and other countries.
The total expertise base includes scientific, veterinary, management, practical, economic, legal, regulatory, societal, cultural, ethical and emergency response aspects of animal welfare in numerous areas of human-animal interactions. These areas include animal use in research, testing and teaching, and on farms, in the home, for sport, recreation and entertainment, in service roles, in the wild and in other arenas.
Where is the AWSBC?
The Centre is located on the campus of Massey University in Palmerston North in New Zealand. Contact can be made via either of the two Co-Directors, one in the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health, and one in the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences.
When was the AWSBC formed?
The Centre evolved from the the Animal Welfare Research Group in the former Faculty of Veterinary Science. Its formation was approved by the Massey University Council in November 1998.
Why was the AWSBC formed?
The Centre has the following objectives: "To promote via scientific research, education and advice, the humane and responsible care of animals, and to develop and apply ethical principles to guide human-animal interactions and the use of biotechnology."
